Student Government announces election results and more at recent senate meeting – The Cauldron

The Cleveland State Student Government Association held elections for its 2024-25 representatives on April 4, announcing the results at the regularly scheduled senate meeting on April 5, among  other updates on textbooks and the case of a former CSU student who went missing in March.

Elections

The only contested election was a three-way race for treasurer between Andrew Sobhy, Hassan Shah and Aderinola Adedeji. Students were given the option to select more than one representative for student organizations and undergraduate at-large senators. All other candidates ran uncontested, though voters were given the option to abstain.

Over 400 students participated in the election, according to SGA Faculty Advisor Kimberly Springer. The winners are reported below, with the percentage of votes received:

President Justin Samsa, 68.2%

Vice President Anastasia Hunt, 69.4%

Secretary Alysha Syed, 75.6%

Treasurer Aderinola Adedeji, 35.7%

Honors College Senator Jack Whitman, 60.7%

Levin College Senator Faith-Ann English, 62.7%

Residence Hall Senator Lincoln Short, 66.9%

Student Organizations Senators Gavin Paulsec and Brett Phenicie, 53.7% and 46.2%, respectively

Undergraduate At-Large Senators Abigail Habegger and T Wyatt, 59.9% and 39.9%, respectively

Siddharth Singh took the oath of office as the new director of finance. Speaker of the Senate Habegger appointed the position of senate parliamentarian to The Edge Senator Joseph Nappi, who was then approved by vote.

Executive Board Updates

President Kayland Morris shared that the Follett contract, which would have enforced a mandatory textbook fee for all students to access their course materials, has been paused, as reported at the faculty senate meeting on Wednesday. Although the fee could have been instated as early as fall 2024, Morris shared her belief that “student involvement in this issue changed the tide.”

Vice President Alysha Syed shared that she is working with Captain Beverly Pettrey, chief of the CSU Police Department to develop a “portal of information” to assist in the case of a missing former CSU student. Originally from India, Abdul Arfath Mohammed was pursuing a Master’s degree in information technologies, though he was no longer enrolled at CSU as of January 2024. He was last seen in early March and is 5’8” tall, weighing 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call Cleveland police at 216-621-1234.

The next senate meeting, the second-to-last of the semester, is scheduled for April 19 at 3:30 p.m. in Berkman Hall 201.
