CSU women’s soccer closes the regular season with a 3-1 victory – The Cauldron
Cleveland State women’s soccer took on conference opponent Wright State for their final game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Krenzler Field. The match kicked off at 7 p.m. with 325 in attendance for their Alumne and Cancer Awareness game.

The first half was a solid start for CSU, with a 5-3 shot advantage over Wright State. In the 38th minute of play, Viking Erica Leinweber, assisted by Mayra Sesmas, was shot from the long post to put Cleveland State up 1-0. The score would remain as the half came to a close.
In the 55th minute of the second half, Raider’s Lauren Borchert scored off a penalty kick to bring the match to a 1-1 tie. Cleveland State was soon to respond, with a right side goal from Erica Leinweber, assisted by Emma Pompo and Brooke Opferman to break the tie.
Mayra Sesmas added to the Viking lead with a second attempt goal from inside the box, to give CSU a 3-1 lead. The match would conclude with a score of 1-3 in favor of the Vikings.
The Cleveland State women’s soccer team closes their season out on a positive note, with an overall record of 4-10-3 (.324) and a conference record of 1-6-3 (.250). The team finished 10th in the 2023 Horizon League standings.
