CSU volleyball hosts Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic CSU Invitational – The Cauldron

Cleveland State volleyball hosted the Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic CSU Invitational, playing three matches against Akron, Harvard and Bucknell in the Woodling Gymnasium between Sept. 6 and Sept. 9. 

On Sept. 6, CSU earned a 3-1 victory over Akron after a strong comeback on the court. The Vikings were behind for most of the first set, until winning five straight points to earn a 26-24 victory in the first set. CSU won the second set 25-17, lost the third set 21-25 and won the fourth set 25-21 to win the match. 

According to CSU Athletics, the Vikings had 13 blocks against Akron, seven from Madison Olinger and four from Madalynn Butler. Leading the number of kills for CSU was Laken Voss with 16, followed by Liberty Torres with 12 and Madison Olinger with nine. Earning her fourth double-double of the season, Karly Klaer had 44 assists and 18 digs. 

With the victory against Akron, CSU advanced to 5-2 on the season. Akron moved forward 3-4.

CSU played their second match of the tournament on Sept. 8 against Harvard. The Vikings dropped in three sets, 16-25, 17-25 and 21-25, but not without putting up a strong fight. Harvard advanced to 3-1 on the season. 

Against Harvard, Ainslie McLaughlin had eight kills and Nia Hall had five kills. 

In their third match of the tournament, CSU dropped in a fierce five sets against Bucknell. After dropping the first set 21-25, CSU won the second set 25-23 and the third set 27-25. CSU dropped the fourth set 23-25 and the fifth set 13-15. 

The Vikings had 91 digs and 24 blocks, with nine blocks from JeriLynn Koehler, eight blocks from Nia Hall and seven blocks from Karly Klaer.

The Vikings will play their last two non-league matches this week, the first being a home match tonight at 6 p.m. against Kent State. Tomorrow, CSU will travel to Akron and play another match with the Zips.
