CSU School of Music: An Agenda of Events – The Cauldron

The Cleveland State University School of Music, “located in one of the most active cultural centers in the United States,” kicks off the academic year with a variety of performances slated for the fall and winter.

CSU Chorale and University Chorus

The CSU Chorale and University Chorus is slated to have a concert on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Waetjen Auditorium, conducted by Director of Choirs Brian Bailey.

The concert will feature guest ensemble Strongsville High School Cantorum, conducted by Vickie Eicher.

More information on the concert’s program and potential costs are to come.

The Chorus began their chorale performances with their Fall Choral Concert on Oct. 14, which was live streamed on the School of Music’s Facebook and website for those unable to attend in person. The concert was free of charge with discounted parking in CSU’s central garage.

The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra

The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Victor Liva, will have two performances in the Waetjen Auditorium this season on Sunday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Dec. 10.

Their fall performance will feature the works of Camille Saint-Saëns and Ludwig van Beethoven, while their winter program will feature not only the work of Antonín Dvořák and the Orchestra’s own Scott Hindulak, but also a selection of holiday music.

Both performances will take place at 3 p.m..

The Philharmonic Orchestra is a non-profit organization and ensemble of professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians across Ohio, founded in 1938.

CSU Jazz

CSU’s Jazz Ensemble and Combos will perform original arrangements and jazz standards at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16 in the School of Music’s Drinko Recital Hall.

The bands will be conducted by Alfredo Guerrieri and Joe Miller.

CSU Jazz Ensemble also has performances in the Waetjen Auditorium on Thursday, Oct, 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively.

Both concerts will be conducted by John Perinne and information on potential costs are to come.

CSU Orchestra

The CSU Chamber Orchestra & Chamber Ensembles are slated to perform on Friday, Oct. 20 in the Waetjen Auditorium. The time is to be announced.

Also slated to perform later this season in the same auditorium is the CSU Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8.

Both will be conducted by Annie Fullard, and information on potential costs are to come.

CSU Vocal Theater Workshop 

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the School of Music will also be hosting a fall semester production: Acis and Galatea, a musical work by George Frideric Handel.

Directed by Nicholas Klein, students will perform fully staged and costumed in the Waetjen Auditorium.

Information on potential costs are to come.

CSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Following not long after on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. will be the performance of the CSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, featuring the city’s award-winning band The Cleveland Winds.

The concert will be conducted by Birch Browning, with another guest conductor to be announced.

Information on potential costs are to come.

Music Composition Workshop

On Monday, Nov. 27, The School of Music will host a Music Composition Workshop led by flutist Sean Gabriel of the No Exit New Music Ensemble, who will “workshop and record CSU student compositions by School of Music graduate and undergraduate Music Composition Majors for solo flute.”

The workshop will take place at 3 p.m. in the Drinko Recital Hall, with details on potential costs to come.

No Exit New Music Ensemble

To follow on Thursday, Nov. 30 will be a performance by No Exit, an ensemble that “serve as an outlet for the commission and performance of contemporary avant-garde concert music,” and is now in its 15th season.

Their performance will take place at 8 p.m. in the Drinko Recital Hall and feature recent contemporary works and premieres.
