CSU men’s tennis captures Horizon League Championship – The Cauldron

The Cleveland State men’s tennis team won the Horizon League Tournament with a 4-2 victory over Belmont on Sunday, April 28.

The 2024 title marks the ninth Horizon League Tournament championship win for the Vikings, tying Cleveland State for the all-time record among league schools.

After Sunday’s win, the Vikings have now won 13 straight matches and sit 21-6 overall this season.

As the No. 1 seed of the North Division, Cleveland State had a bye in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament, automatically advancing to the second round due to their preferential status, before defeating Tennessee State and Belmont to claim the championship

In the championship match, the Vikings took the doubles point with wins from teams of Lincoln Battle and Devin Boyer at No. 3 and Carl Gedlitschka and JuandeDios Abboud at No. 1. After Belmont fought back with two singles wins, the Vikings responded with three singles wins from Nico Jamison, Boyer, and Gedlitschka to secure the title.

With the victory Sunday, the Vikings will extend their season in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament with a first round matchup against No. 1 seed, Ohio State. The Vikings will take on the Buckeyes in Columbus where Ohio State is undefeated at home this season.
