CSU men’s soccer beats Xavier in final non-league game – The Cauldron

Cleveland State took down the Musketeers with 165 in attendance for their final non-league game on Tuesday, Oct 8 . The Vikings won at home with a score of 3-1, advancing the team to an overall of 3-5-3 and a conference record of 0-3-1.
Within the first 22 seconds of play, Xavier was able to get on the board off of a shot from the right corner. Cleveland State responded in the 16th minute, pulling even off of a goal from freshman Matteo Correia, who was assisted by junior Josip Rimac and graduate student Bojan Kolevski. Despite the aggression from the Musketeer side with 9-3 in shots, the score remained tied at one apiece at half.
Cleveland State carried out the same momentum into the second half, with Matteo Correia scoring yet another goal, assisted by freshman Tom Mertz in the 62nd minute to put the Vikings on top. To put the cherry on top in the final minutes, Sophomore Caleb Trowbridge scored off of a free kick, giving CSU a 3-1 advantage that would win the game.
Player Highlights: Matteo Correia, and graduate student William Wagner lead the team in shots with two apair. Senior Ryan Poling had seven saves, earring him his first win.
The Viking will return to play on Saturday, Oct 12 at 7 p.m. against IU Indy on Alumni day.
